The Lathe And I

lathe

I think that the Oliver patternmaker's lathe is my favorite tool. I can turn something 6 feet long on the 11 foot ways, and it will swing 26 inches. I can kick the tailstock over and turn tapers and I can angle the headstock as well so that the work is held securely in a straight line even though it is turning a taper. It has a powered carriage and a cross slide with a tool post that will hold a cutter while the carriage runs up and down. I have outfitted it with an indexing plate and I can mount a router on the cross slide. This lets me route flat places at any angle to each other and then route mortises in the flat places. I can also use the router to make reeds and flutes in a turning. I can also work more conventionally using hand held chisels. The possibilities with it seem endless.
