House, December 1973

house

This is the point that our house was at in late fall of 1973. Since we bought the property in June, 20 acres with nothing it but trees, grass and an old split rail fence on it, we had put in a well near the creek and run a water line diagonally across the property to the building site on the hill. I had built a tool shed and a wood shed as well as the house, which was unfinished with studs showing inside when we moved in. It was wired for electricity although there was as yet no power to it and it would be five years before that happened. Inside the window at the roof peak is a sleeping loft that was accessed by a ladder. The bathroom and kitchen were plumbed and working. We had a wood burning cookstove for heating and cooking. I had done all of this myself, with hand tools, except for a backhoe which came to dig the well and put the septic system in the ground. We got all necessary permits and everything was signed off.
